The Magic Of Maca In Banana Smoothies
Maca powder tastes earthy and nutty with sweet caramel tones. Available in health shops and health aisles of supermarkets, this powdered form of a root vegetable from the Inca era hails from Peru and is often called Peruvian Ginseng. It has aphrodisiac properties along with many health benefits. Known to increase libido and enhance mood, maca powder is a great little boost to add to your smoothies for a delicious caramel flavour and a burst of energy.
The Maca is a cruciferous vegetable belonging to the brassica family consisting of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli amongst others. It is full of vital nutrients like vitamin C, carbs, manganese, copper and iron. Like with all nutritional supplements, I only add a small amount. A tablespoon added to two serves of smoothie is enough. The taste of maca goes really well with banana. If you can't find maca, just skip it in the recipe below. The smoothie still tastes really delicious with the dates and nut butter added to it.

Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas
- 2 cups (500 ml) almond milk
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-4 pitted Medjool dates, soaked in hot water for 10 minutes
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon maca powder, optional
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to the jug of a blender. Blend until smooth.
- Pour into 2 X 325ml lidded glass jars. Will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Notes
- If you can't find maca powder, just skip it. You could alternatively supplement it with malt powder or even a teaspoon of coffee for a lovely variation to your smoothie.
- I often add a serving of my Bare Protein Powder to boost the smoothie.
- I use Himalayan pink salt in this recipe.
- I soak my dates in hot water for 10 minutes to soften them before blending.
Sorry autocorrect. I meant I left out the maca powder.
This is delicious! I left out the Max’s and put in a splash of coffee. So good!
